Auto Accident without Witnesses

Sometimes there are no witnesses to car accidents. If you are not aware of any witnesses, there are other important steps you can take to prepare for a consultation with a car accident lawyer and improve your chances in court. Call the police and ask to have an officer dispatched to the scene.  Once police arrive, stay on the scene until a full report is completed by the officer.

If you are uninjured and feeling okay, you should take notes and document the collision as soon as possible while the facts are fresh:

  • Take some notes describing what happened
  • Take photos of the scene to show the position of the cars and the direction of travel, as well as any damage
  • Draw a simple diagram showing what happened

Most importantly, keep your discussion with the other parties to a minimum. In the confusion and stress of the moment, it is critical you do not admit fault or accept blame for the accident. Limit your communication with the other driver to requesting a driver’s license number, contact information and a license plate number. Also make sure to get the driver’s insurance information and the vehicle identification number.
